Services

Individuals of all ages are welcome at CARRD, Inc. We have assisted young children through adults master reading. All individuals receive one-on-one remedial phonological processing and reading instruction. The CARRD, Inc. provides a full assessment that includes the assessment of reading and its subskills, and ADHD. At-risk individuals for reading difficulties are offered detailed plans to target remediation.

Assessment

The first component includes a comprehensive assessment to evaluate the individual’s current abilities and any present difficulties. The assessment battery includes measures of the individual’s reading abilities, attention, hearing, nonverbal intelligence, and behavioral and emotional functioning as it relates to academics. Upon completion of the assessment battery, a full report is provided detailing the individual’s performance on the various measures. From this report, a specific intervention is designed to help the individual become a competent reader.

Assessment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

As part of the assessment battery, individuals are screened for attention deficits. Assessment measures include parent and teacher reports as well as completion of a continuous performance task (the TOVA; www.TOVATest.com). If attention difficulties are present, the report can be taken to the individual’s physician for further evaluation and diagnosis. If medication is necessary, titration monitoring can be done through the CARRD, Inc. office, which would include periodic evaluations and score comparisons to determine whether or not the medication is improving the individual’s attention capabilities.

Interventions

The reading component of the assessment battery identifies individuals at-risk of developing or currently experiencing reading difficulties. Once identified, these individuals can receive tutoring services through CARRD, Inc. The individual typically attends one-on-one training with a tutor for at least 30 minutes, 2-3 times per week. Our tutors are trained in phonological processing and knowledgeable in child development and instructional techniques. The goal of tutoring is to provide instruction on the skills necessary for successful reading acquisition. Hours of operation are flexible and based on the family’s schedule. Sessions take place in a child-friendly environment.

Teach Children?

Educators

Educators
CARRD, Inc. provides school systems with procedures to determine if students are at risk of developing or currently are experiencing reading difficulties. Once identified, these students are provided with a training program within the school to help them become competent readers.

Identification
Children experiencing reading difficulties are identified using the Reading Screening. The Reading Screening is an online assessment comprised of fourteen tasks essential for successful reading acquisition. Upon completion of the Reading Screening, a generated report will detail the student’s strengths and weaknesses on the fourteen tasks.

Intervention
Students identified as having reading difficulties are provided with a training program conducted within their respective school throughout the school year. The training program was developed at the CARRD by Dr. David P. Hurford and is based on his extensive research on phonological processing and reading development. The student attends one-on-one training for at least 30 minutes, 2-3 times per week. The program consists of training in the following areas: phonemic discrimination, letter recognition (letter identification and letter sound correspondence), phonemic synthesis (blending), phonemic analysis (deletion and segmentation tasks), word knowledge, vocabulary, reading (sentence reading, longer discourse reading) and spelling. At the end of the school year, students are re-evaluated on the Reading Screening to determine their progress. Progress monitoring tools are also available through the CARRD and can be used throughout the school year.
